Maximal Sustained Metabolic Rate in Endotherm

Abstract:Maximal sustained metabolic rate refers to the maximum metabolic rate maintained by an animal while keeping its constant body weight during a period. It may determine life history parameters such as distribution range, maximal potential litter size and foraging and other activity ranges of vertebrates, thus its significance is generally recognized. In the paper, four hypotheses i.e. food limit hypothesis; peripheral limit hypothesis; central limit hypothesis and symmorphosis hypothesis regarding the maximal sustained metabolic rate in vertebrates are reviewed and recent advances in this field summarized. The mechanism of resting metabolic rate increased with sustained metabolic rate are analyzed, and the implications of metabolic ceilings for animals life history discussed. Finally the future directions for the study on maximal sustained metabolic rate are pointed out.
