Preliminary Study on the Intake of Gross Energy and Crude Protein for Captive Mandrillus sphinx

Abstract:To explore the intakes of gross energy and crude protein for captive Mandrillus sphinx, 20 health mandrills from Chengdu Zoo, China were sampled for feeding experiment. The 20 healthy mandrills were divided into the adult group (4 replicates) and youth group (no replicate). The feeding trials were conducted for 4 weeks in spring (March), summer (July) and autumn (September), respectively. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the intakes of gross energy and crude protein among different seasons (P>0.05). The average daily intakes of gross energy and crude protein of each adult mandrill were 6544.47 kJ and 44.54 g, respectively, while the average daily intakes of gross energy and crude protein in the youth mandrill group were 3401.37 kJ and 23.52 g, respectively. It indicated that higher intakes of gross energy and crude protein were found in adult mandrills than that of the youth mandrills (P<0.05). Meanwhile, as a conclusion, the intake of gross energy and crude protein for adult mandrill per unit of body weight (kg) per day were 291.40 kJ and 1.97 g, respectively.
