Changes of the Locomotor Performance and Activities of ATPase and AChE of Bufo raddei under the Stress of Heavy Metal Pollution

Abstract:The jumping performance of the toad Bufo raddei sampled from the relatively unpolluted area (Liujiaxia) and the heavy metal polluted area (Baiyin) was studied, the activities of total-ATPase, Ca2+-ATPase and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) from the toad’s thigh muscle were measured. The results showed that the toad’s jumping performance from Baiyin area was poorer than that of Liujiaxia area, while the activities of the three enzymes increased. It suggested that heavy metals have negative effects on the toad’s locomotor performance, which might decrease their fitness. The increased activities of total-ATPase, Ca2+-ATPase and AChE might be induced by the low level of heavy metals. The mechanism and pathway of heavy metals decreasing the locomotor performance of the toad are unknown and requires further research.
