The Comparative Structure of the Oral Apparatus and Hyobranchial Skeleton in Five Tadpoles

Abstract:The oral apparatus and hyobranchial skeleton morphology of five anuran species were examined using the stereoscope and double-stained methods. The results showed that the oral apparatus is consisted of tooth rows, marginal papillaes and keratinization of jaw sheaths in five anuran species. The hyobranchial skeleton is composed of the copula, the copula, two ceratohyals, two hypobranchial plates and four pairs of certobranchials. It can be concluded that the tadpole scrape food using developed Meckel’s cartilages or filter food using ceratobranchial. Appearance of the jaw sheaths and filter which ruffle in tadpole enhanced the feeding ability and food selectivity significantly.
