Abstract:The habitat dens of Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) in Hupingshan Nature Reserve in Hunan Province were investigated and analysed by quantitiative index from April to August in 2001. The results showed that the water depth, width of den, water speed and composition of the river bed were the main factors for giant salamander to select the den, but the eleration and height of the den wrer not the main factors. At the same time, eight rivers in the nature reserves in Youyang County of Chongqing, Taibai County of Shaanxi Province, Lushi and Xin’an counties in Henan Province were studied. The rivers that giant salamander surviving were divided into four types: creek, U type river, flat river and interior river.
