Abstract:The current progress in research of dormancy of tardigrada was reviewed in this paper. Dormancy is a collective name for an ametabolic state of life utilized by Tardigrada to overcome periods of unfavourable environment conditions. The dormancy was classified as cryptobiosis (e.g., anhydrobiosis, cryobiosis, osmobiosis and anoxybiosis) or diapause (e.g., encystment and resting eggs). The dormant state in tardigrade (e.g., tuns, cyst, resting eggs) can occur at any stage of life, which can help tardigrades survive some unfavorable environments, extending individual’s life-span. In a word, dormancy plays an important role in ecology and evolution of Tardigrada.
