Abstract:A preliminary investigation on number and distribution of large mammals in eastern Arjin Mountains Nature Reserve was conducted in December 2003. We found that the number of Equus kiang and Pantholops hodgsoni had increased to some extent, but the number of Bos mutus had declined. There was a relatively low number of Procapra picticaudata, Canis lupus and Vulpes vulpus. The estimated population size of Equus kiang, Pantholops hodgsoni, Bos mutus and Procapra picticaudata was 8309, 1603, 985 and 214 individuals, respectively, estimated by the line transect sampling method. Based on our investigation, inadequate food supply and human disturbance (poaching, mining and enclosure, and so on) may be the key factors, which limited the population growth.
