Effects of pH on the Oxygen Consumption Rate and Ammonia Excretion Rate in Juvenile Megalobrama pellegrini

Abstract:The effect of different pH (5.5, 6, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0 and 8.5) on oxygen consumption rate in juvenile Megalobrama pellegrini was measured in a sealed respiratory chamber. The results showed that the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) changed significantly during 24 hours, OCR during the daytime was higher than that at night, and higher in the afternoon than in the morning, but there was no significant difference during night time. The average OCR at different pH was 0.7135 mg/(g·h). The maximum average OCR was 0.8665 mg/(g·h) at pH 7.5, while the minimum average OCR was 0.5397 mg/(g·h) at pH5.5. The asphyxial point (AP) of juvenile Megalobrama pellegrini was 1.3920, 1.3067, 1.1547, 1.0683, 1.0933, 1.1733, and 1.2331 mg/L at pH 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, and 8.5, respectively. The average AP was 1.2008 mg/L.
