Histochemical Study on the Pituitary Structure in Rare Minnows (Gobiocypris rarus)

Abstract:Rare minnows (Gobiocypris rarus), a small freshwater fish endemic to China, are important trial animals nowadays. The structure of the rare minnow pituitary was observed histologically and histochemically, using Mallory’s trichrome, AF staining, and controlled by H.E staining. Shaped like a kidney, the pituitary was comprised of neurohypophysis and adenohypophysis, attaching to the hypothalamus by a pituitary stalk. Adenohypophysis was divided into three parts, the rostral pars distalis (RPD), proximal pars distalis (PPD) and pars intermedia (PI) according to distinct histochemistrical characteristics. The curved branches of the neurohypophysis were inserted into each part of the adenohypophysis, and were the most plentiful in PI. The blood vessels were rich in all parts of the pituitary.
