Selection for Pit-Building Materials of Myreleon formicarious

Abstract:The selection for pit-building materials of Myreleon formicarious was studied through analyzing the effects of two types of materials, different particle-sized soils, and water content of soil on pit-building rates. The results showed that larvae of all three instars preferred medium-size soil for building pits. For larvae of all three instars, the highest pit-building rate and largest pit diameter was in soil whose particle size was 70~40 mesh. The second-instar and third-instar larvae also hadhigher rates of pit-building and larger pit diameters in soil (admixture of >70 and <20 mesh), and there were no statistically significant differences in the two kinds of materials. Larvae of all three instars had the higher rates of pit-building when the water content of pit-building material was <3%.
