The Histological Study on Hypophysis of the Lizard, Physignathus cocincinus

Abstract:These methods, including HE staining, Nissl staining, and Holmes silver staining, were employed to reveal the histological structure of each part of the hypophysis gland of the lizard, Physignathus cocincinus. There were two major portions in the hypophysis, the adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis. The hypophysis of the lizard belonged to the dorsal-pelvic type. Results of HE staining showed that the adenohypophysis cells could be divided into three types: eosinophilic cells, basophilic cells, and chromophobe cells. Additionally, the ependymal cells and the hypophysis cleft of neurohypophysis were also observed. Results of Nissl staining showed there were Herring body of neurohypophysis and the pars intermedia cells of adenohypophysis which were compactly arranged. Results of Holmes silver staining revealed the existence of the unmyelinated nerve fiber of neurohypophysis and the vascular of hypophyseal portal system. The connection of the hypophysis cleft with aqueduct in the optic lobe was first reported here.
