Comparative Study on the Surface Ultrastructures of the Head and Back Needle Hairs of Canis lupus

Abstract:Surface ultrastructures of head needle hair and back needle hair of Canis lupus were observed and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the shape of the two kinds of needle hairs were fusiform. There were certain differences in the type of squama, the smooth degree of dissociated edge of squama, the height of squama and the density of squama between corresponding typical parts of the two kinds of needle hairs. First, there were highly significant differences in height and density between the near root part of head needle hair and the near root part of back needle hair. Second, there were no significant differences in height between the two main parts and between the two near ending parts. But while density showed highly significant differences between the two main parts, it showed no significant difference between the two near ending parts. The results can provide certain basic data for morphological and taxonomic research of Canis lupus.
