Abstract:Giant pandas’ behaviors of both the seasonal vertical migration and pursuing bamboo shoots depended on the breeding physiological mechanism, and also were closely related with the seasonal change in nutritional content of staple bamboo, the unique biochemical characteristics of bamboo shoots and the heterogeneous pattern of geographic distribution of bamboo. Starting with the foraging behavior of giant pandas, we summarized and analyzed the breeding physiological mechanism of this species, and the relationship of the staple bamboo distribution and characteristics of growth and development. We proposed the basic principles of conservation and management, such as the integration of species protection and community development, the combination of nature reservations and scientific research, on the basis of the eco-biological characteristics of this species. Furthermore, we should make some effective measures to improve habitat management, namely, the vertical layout management of territorial forest systems, and prohibit the cutting of staple bamboo shoots, and establish food bases for captive pandas.
