Anatomical and Histological Observations on the Urinary System of Ichthyophis bannanica (Amphibia-Gymnophiona)

Abstract:The anatomy and histology of the urinary system of Ichthyophis bannanica were examined. The results showed that: The urinary system of I. bannanica consisted of the mesonephros, ureter, and bladder. The mesonephros included the renal corpuscle and renal tubules, without zones of cortex and medulla. Renal corpuscles were located at the dorsolateral zone of the kidney. The renal tubules were composed of the neck segment, first and second proximal segment, intermediate segment, first and second distal segment, and the collecting tubule. The two ureters were located at the dorsolateral position of the kidney, and their epithelial cells at the front part were simple cubic epithelium transited to pseudostratified epithelium at the back-end part. The bladder of I. bannanica was a cloacal bladder, and the inner wall had well-developed villi, and the villous epithelium was transitional epithelium.
