Abstract:
The effects of plantations on bird diversity in Yinggeling Nature Reserve, Hainan Island, China, was examined from October 2005 to April 2006, using belt transect count and mist net methods. A total of 102 bird species were recorded, of which three bird species(Monticola rufiventris, Ficedula strophiata and Carduelis spinus) were new records for Hainan Island. Compared with the natural tropical primary and secondary forest, bird diversity in plantations and the forest edge was considerably lower, with the plantation having the lowest bird diversity. Habitat fragmentation caused by plantations has a negative effect on bird diversity in Yinggeling Nature Reserve.
