Age, Growth and Other Population Characteristics of Bufo tibetanus in Nyingchi City, Tibet

Abstract:In order to understand the population characteristics of Bufo tibetanus and accumulate more biological data of this species. The age structure, body length, morphology of male and female gonads and age of sexual maturity of 63 B. tibetanus individuals (♀29, 34), a population located at high altitude of Nyingchi City (Tibet Autonomous Region), were analyzed by observing the gonadal morphology and histological structure. The lines of arrested growth could be clearly observed in the 3rd phalanx sections. A positive relationship between body length and age were found in both sexes (P<0.01). The differences of body length and average age between sexes were not significant (P>0.05). In addition, the sexual maturity age of both sexes is the same (4 years old). The maximum life span of females is 9 years, while that of the males is 8 years. It can be concluded that the age structure of this B. tibetanus population from 2014 to 2015 belongs to growth type and this population has the potential of healthy development.
