Preliminary Study on Ecological Restoration of Amphibian Breeding Habitat in the Changbai Mountain Road Area

Abstract:Road construction has caused habitat loss and degradation of amphibian breeding in the Changbai Mountain area. To mitigate and restore the damaged habitat for amphibian breeding along roads, breeding habitat restoration of Siberian salamander (Salamandrella keyserlingii) and Chinese brown frog (Rana chensinensis) were carried out from the end of March to the beginning of May, 2021 in the highway ring area of Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve (Jilin Province). A total of 40 ponds (> 10 m2 in area and > 15 cm in depth) were selected within 100 m on both sides of the highway, and 10 network frames and 20 branch frames were set as auxiliary materials. The results showed that:(1) Network frame and branch frame only improved the utilization rate of breeding ponds by S. keyserlingii, but not R. chensinensis; (2)The utilization rate of branch frame (85.00%) by S. keyserlingii was significantly higher than that of network frame (50.00%) (P=0.03); (3) In the experimental group, the egg numbers of S. keyserlingii (197.00±11.29) and R. chensinensis (149.00±13.74) were higher than those of the control group (128.00±11.32 and 88.00±14.12, respectively), albeit the difference was not significant. This study suggests that branch frame may be the best auxiliary material for the breed and spawn of amphibian in further amphibian tunnel design and roadside amphibian habitat restoration in the Changbai Mountain road area, followed by network frame.
