Avian Diversity and Birdstrike Risk Evaluation in the Cangyuan Washan Airport, Yunnan

Abstract:Birdstrike has been a serious problem for airports around the world. It is essential to carry out risk assessment for bird strike to possibly conclude prevention methods in each airport, especially for those newly built ones. The Washan Airport, which locates in Cangyuan County of Yunnan Province, is such a new one opened at the end of 2016. We conducted field surveys by line transects in and around this airport in 4 seasons of 2017-2018, followed the standard protocol issued by the Civil Aviation Administration of China. Birdstrike risk was assessed for each recorded species in each season separately, according to its population number, body mass, encountering frequency, habitat utilization, and flight height. Totally, we recorded 164 bird species belonging to 46 families and 13 orders, among which residents were the majority (73.8%). It had an obvious seasonal change for avian community composition in the survey area. Number of bird species and biodiversity index were higher in spring and winter than those in summer and autumn. According to the risk assessment for each species, 13 of them were ranked in the high-risk category. Based on the ecological characters of these species, we put forward point to point suggestions for birdstrike prevention in the airport.
