A Preliminary Study on the Ontogenetic Characteristics of Captive-Bred Hynobius maoershanensis

Abstract:In this study, Hynobius maoershanensis tadpoles were raised by artificial breeding methods and their developmental characteristics were recorded. The results indicated that H. maoershanensis tadpoles grew normally under the conditions of artificial breeding. The forelimb buds were protuberant but undifferentiated at hatching. Forelimb development was completed in about 17 d after hatching, and posterior limb development was completed in about 30 d. The period from hatching to metamorphosis could be divided into 4 periods, which lasted for 102 d. H. maoershanensis tadpoles developed more slowly than other species of the same genus. It is suggested that in the artificial breeding, fresh Artemia salina and fresh red worm should be given as the main food sources, and earthworm and cooked egg yolks can be given as supplements. Soaking H. maoershanensis tadpoles with 0.000 4% potassium permanganate solution for half an hour can effectively inhibit the infection and transmission of Saprolegniasis.
