Primary Explore of Hand-rearing of Asian Water Monitor (Varanus salvator )

Abstract:The food, living habit and diseases of 4 Asian water monitor reared in Chengdu Zoo during year 2001~2007 were observed. Result showed that the Asian water monitor was timid, and it had a little movement at daytime. It could ingest living crucian, frog and mouse voluntarily. It also could intake bovine meat, pork and partridge egg voluntarily. It often suffered from parasitoses, catching a cold and afterwords suffered from pneumonia. The ideal temperature and relative humidity was 25~30 and 50%~90% respectively. The basic temperature and relative temperature for living through the winter safely was 20 and 60%~90%. So it was difficult to feed by hand. This paper also provides some suggestions on ways for controlling environment, temperature and humidity, husbandry management in summer and winter.
