Roosting Behavior and Roost-site Selection of Reintroduced Syrmaticus humiae

Abstract:Roosting behavior and roost-site selected by the reintroduced Syrmaticus humiae were studied with transect and radio telemetry and sampling approaches from April 2003 to March 2005 in Cenwanglaoshan Nature Reserve, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. During the study, 10 roost-sites were found. The results of surveys showed that: the pheasants roosted in tree at most occasions and roosted in the ground at few occasions. They roosted in a tree alone in the conifer forest, but roosting in a tree alone or 2~3 individuals together in the broadleaf forest. With principal component analysis, it showed that the roost-site selection of pheasant was sequentially associated with height and diameter of the roost-tree, coverage of canopy, shrub and herb, the distance of water source and roosting height. The pheasant liked to roost in the tree which height was ♀4.96±1.39 m, ♂5.52 ± 1.95 m, and the diameter of roost-tree was ♀21.4 ± 8.29 cm, ♂23.50 ± 8.39 cm. The coverage of canopy was 78.00% ± 8.23%, and the coverage of shrub was 44.50% ± 29.67%, but the coverage of herb was low. The distance of water source was 348.50 ± 308.3 0 m, slope degree was 44.800±14.730 and the roosting places were usually 2.40 ± 0.74 m above the ground.
