Diversity and Changes of Large and Medium-Sized Mammals in the Heizhugou National Nature Reserve Based on Infrared Cameras

Abstract:Mammal monitoring can help us to know the status and changing trends of mammal resources and provide scientific basis for the protection and management of mammal groups. To understand the resources and changes of mammals in the Heizhugou National Nature Reserve, we set up camera traps in the reserve and the around areas from March 2013 to March 2018. With an intensive survey effort of 17 777 camera-days, 1 179 detections of mammal, including 18 species belonging to 12 families and 4 orders were obtained. Among the detected mammal species, the largest species was carnivore with 12 species (accounting for 66.67%) and including 2 classⅠnationally key protected wild mammals and 6 class Ⅱ nationally key protected wild mammals.During the detected period, the top 5 mammals in relative abundance were Martes flavigula, Paguma larvata, Prionailurus bengalensis, Mustela sibirica and Ailurus fulgens, but the species with the highest relative abundance were different. There was no difference in annual animal shooting rate, indicating that the animal community was relatively stable. Despite the lack of large carnivores, there were 6 medium-sized carnivores with relatively high abundance, including Vulpes vulpes, Viverra zibetha, Martes flavigula, Prionailurus bengalensis, Mustela sibirica and Mustela kathiah. In addition, there were differences in species number, animal shooting rate and human interference inside and outside the reserve. The human interference in the reserve was relatively small, however, species were abundant, especially in the mixed broadleaf-conifer forest, which indicated that good results have been achieved in the protection work of the reserve for many years.
