Abstract:The food, living habit and disease of 4 Asian water monitor Varanus salvator reared in Chengdu Zoo during 2001~2007 were observed. The result showed the Asian water monitor was timid, it had a little movement at daytime. It could ingest living crucian, frog and mouse voluntarily, and it also could intake bovine meat, pork and partridge egg voluntarily. It often suffered parasitoses, catching  cold and then suffered pneumonia. The ideal temperature and relative humidity were 25~30℃ and 50%~90% respectively, and the basic temperature and relative humidity for living through the winter safely were 20℃ and 60%~90%. So it was difficult to be reared by hand. This paper also provides some suggestiones of the controlling ways of environment, temperature and humidity, husbandry management in summer and winter.
