Preliminary Camera-Trapping Survey on Wild Mammals and Birds in the Wujiao Nature Reserve, Sichuan

Abstract:Background investigation of wildlife resources is one of the basic tasks of scientific research monitoring in nature reserves. From January 2014 to September 2018, camera traps were installed to investigate the diversity of mammals and birds in the Wujiao Nature Reserve, Sichuan. In this study, with an intensive survey effort of 3 039 efficient camera days at 39 locations (26 grids), 2 162 photographs, 744 videos and 723 independent records were collected. A total of 19 wild mammal species belonging to 11 families and 4 orders, and 21 wild bird species belonging to 8 families and 3 orders were identified. Among the detected species, 4 species were the class Ⅰ nationally protected wild animals and 11 species were the class Ⅱ nationally protected wild animals. Six species was evaluated as vulnerable by IUCN and 2 as near threatened. Based on the relative abundance index, blood pheasant (Ithaginis cruentus, 8.93), tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus, 5.13), temminck's tragopan (Tragopan temminckii, 4.11), Swinhoe's striped squirrel (Tamiops swinhoei, 1.50), Elliot's laughingthrush (Trochalopteron elliotii, 1.42), Chinese serow (Capricornis milneedwardsii, 0.87), and masked palm civet (Paguma larvata, 0.87) were ranked as the top most 7 abundant mammal and bird species. Two mammal species including yellow-bellied weasel (Mustela kathiah), Reeve's muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) and 7 bird species including grey treepie (Dendrocitta formosae), barred laughingthrush (Garrulax lunulatus), golden bush robin (Tarsiger chrysaeus), Indian blue robin (Larvivora brunnea), White's thrush (Zoothera aurea), Chinese thrush (Turdus mupinensis), and chestnut thrush (Turdus rubrocanus), were found to be the new records in the reserve. In conclusion, the resource status of animals and birds in the reserve obtained using the infrared camera technology can be used as a useful supplement to the traditional survey methods, and the biodiversity data obtained by continuous monitoring will contribute to the long-term monitoring and conservation management of the reserve.
