Establishment of PAE Coding System and Ethogram of Rhinopithecus roxellana Using Infrared Camera

Abstract:By using the video data obtained from infrared camera traps, all the behaviors of golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) in the Wolong National Nature Reserve were classified and coded, and the relationship among behavioral process, action mode and environment was studied. Subsequently, the ethogram was established according to the "posture-act-environment" axis based on the ecological function of behavior, and 17 postures, 84 acts and 116 behaviors were finally identified. By comparing the behavioral characteristics of R. roxellana to other 2 species of golden monkey (R. bieti and R. brelichi), we found that the most behaviors were generally consistent with each other but with a few differences due to the differences in habitats, geographical isolation and learning behaviors. Such kinds of behavioral diversity might lead to the formation of special behaviors in each species, such as feeding while jumping in R. roxellana and prostration of female monkeys. Moreover, the behavioral effects were also different, for example, the action of fast-grooming conveyed different messages in the 3 species. Therefore, establishing the ethogram of R. roxellana is conducive to comprehensively and accurately understanding their basic behavioral ecology, and can provide scientific basis for further research of this species.
