Preliminary Observation on the Anthelmintic Effect of Three Benzimidazole Drugs on Baylisascaris schroederi

Abstract:Baylisascaris schroederi is one of the most common and harmful endoparasites in captive giant pandas. Drug repellent is the main measure to control this ascariasis in captive giant pandas. In order to screen effective anthelmintic drugs, the anthelmintic effects of 3 benzimidazoles (albendazole tablets, fenbendazole ointment and mebendazole tablets) on B. schroederi were studied using egg negative rate and excretion rate. The results showed that the effectiveness of fenbendazole taken orally at 5 mg·kg-1 body mass once a day for 2 days was poor. However, the 3 drugs had good anthelmintic effect on B. schroederi when they were orally administered at 10 mg·kg-1 body mass once a day for 2 days.
