Comparative Study on the Eggshell Microstructures of Four Extant Species of Ratite and Their Significance

Abstract: The microstructures of four extant species of ratite eggshells were compared among four species of ratites: Struthio camelus, Rhea americana, Dromaius novaehollandiae and Casuarius casuarius through SEM. The features of inner and outer surface as well as the gradation of their cross-sections of these eggshells were also described. The results show that the outer surface that the eggshells of the Dromaius novaehollandiae and Casuarius casuarius eggshells are rough and their blocky crystal units are developed. On the other hand, Struthio camelus and Rhea americana are quite alike. Thus this suggests that the Dromaius novaehollandiae and Casuarius casuarius as well as the Struthio camelus and Rhea americana have some similarities in mophogenesis and evolution separately, which shows no difference with the molecular evolution results.
