Abstract:From May to October 2016, we conducted a survey on the population size and distribution of Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) in Louguantai Experimental Forest Farm (43 026 hm2) located on the northern slope of Mt. Qinling in Shaanxi province. And then the social structure was analyzed. By using a V-shaped transects for the survey and long-term monitoring of infrared cameras, the monkeys were encountered 2 times at 2 different sites and the individuals of each group were counted: one was 65 individuals and the other was 72. We finally confirmed the two groups to be one by some identified individuals and their social structure. The 137 individuals were found to belong to 15 one-male units (mean=8.6 individuals/OMU, of which 40% were adults, 48% were juveniles, and the remaining 12% were infants) and 1 all-male unit (8 individuals). The sex ratio of female to male was 2.40: 1, while the average ratio of adults to juveniles was 1: 1.22. Compared to other groups of R. roxellana in Mt. Qinling, the average numbers of OMUs were the same, but the sex ratio of female to male in Louguantai Experimental Forest Farm was lower than that of other groups. In this survey, we not only found out the number and distribution of R. roxellana in Louguantai Experimental Forest Farm, but also provided some basic data for the feeding and management of the monkey in Shaanxi Rare Wildlife Rescue Research Center.
