Study on the Activity Rhythm and Time Budget of Captive Garrulax courtoisi

Abstract:During January to December in 2015, the activity rhythm and time budget of 8 captive blue-crowned laughing thrushes (Garrulax courtoisi) in Nanchang Zoo were studied by using the instantaneous scan method. The results showed that the variation trends of G. courtoisi behaviors throughout the year were different. Specifically, the frequencies of nesting, mating, sitting, incubating and feeding chicks increased in breeding period, after then the resting increased obviously. Among the year, feeding had the highest time budget (36.37%), followed by flying (24.54%), preening (16.73%), resting (7.75%), social behavior (5.43%), feeding chicks (4.66%), nesting (2.36%), incubating (1.92%), sitting (0.15%) and mating (0.01%). One-Way ANOVA was used to analyze the difference between percentage of behavioral frequency in different breeding stages, and the result indicated that the time budgets of all behaviors except mating were extreme significantly different in different breeding stages (P<0.001). In general, the behavior rhythm and time budget of G. courtoisi reflected its different needs in different breeding stages. These findings could provide reasonable guidelines for further behavioral studies of captive and wild G. courtoisi.
