Activity Pattern of Lophophorus lhuysii by Camera-trapping in Wolong National Nature Reserve, China

Abstract:Chinese monal (Lophophorus lhuysii) is a kind of rare pheasant only restricted to the mountains of western China. At present, the first-hand data of Chinese monal about its behavior and habitats are inadequate due to the limited monitoring studies. In this study, from November 2013 to March 2016, 20 infrared-triggered camera-traps were installed in the alpine region of Wolong National Nature Reserve, Sichuan, China. A total of 7 056 camera-days of data were collected, including approximately 120 000 photos and video clips. The effective capture number of Chinese monal was 106, with relative abundance index 15.02. The statistical results showed that the annual activity peak of Chinese monal was in July, and the daily activity peaks were during the periods of 08:00-10:00 and 18:00-20:00. The daily activity rhythms were varied among genders and seasons. The range of preferred ambient temperatures for Chinese monal activity was detected from 0-10℃, and the population had the phenomena of assembling and seasonal vertical migration, indicated that the Wolong National Nature Reserve provides a relatively hospitable habitat for this species. The activity intensity of the male Chinese monal was nearly as twice as that of female. This study would be helpful to comprehend the ecological features of Chinese monal, and provide fundamental information for further protection and research.
