New Subspecies of Cuora cyclornata (Blanck, Mccord & Le, 2006), Cuora trifasciata (Bell, 1825) and Cuora aurocapitata (Luo & Zong, 1988)

Abstract:Recent genetic studies have revalidated Cuora cyclornata and shown that a third, yet undescribed genetic subgroup which can be differentiated colorimetrically and morphometrically from the previously recognized 2 subspecies. Similarly for C. trifasciata a divergent genetic group was identified that can be clearly assigned to the specimens from Hainan Island, China. The same is true for C. aurocapitata where a colorimetrical well-distinguished variety has long been known, and this is supported by microsatellite markers (Tiedemann et al., 2014) and by morphometrics. Here we use geometric morphological methods for the discriminant function analysis. Both the genetic results and the morphometric analysis of the shell clearly support the distinctiveness between C. trifasciata and C. cyclornata and the undescribed subspecies. These3 groups are herein described as the new subspecies C. cyclornata annamitica,C. trifasciata luteocephala and C. aurocapitata dabieshani, respectively.
