Improved Experimental Techniques of Blood Collection from the Submandibular Vein Plexus in Mice

Abstract:Objective To introduce a simple and repeatable blood collection method from the submandibular vein plexus of mice. The operators can collect a large amount of blood by using this method. Methods We first chose the best point of blood collection by anatomical observation of facial blood vessels in mice, then the microcapillary pipets were used to collect blood quickly and efficiently. About 20 SPF ICR male mice with a weight range of 18-22 g were selected, and the blood was collected from the submandibular point using the microcapillary pipet. Results Appropriately, a volume of 0.5-0.7 mL blood could be collected from each mouse within 40-60 s by one operator. Conclusion The improved blood collection method had the advantages of smaller trauma to the experimental mice and can collect more blood. In addition, the operation process can be easily repeated. This method was particularly suitable for the beginners or people who needed large amounts of blood from mice. This improved blood collect method was an easy, safe, fast and efficient method to get more blood from mice, which should become an extensively used method.
