The Phylogeny of Chinese Thripidae Based on Cladistics

Abstract:Thripidae is one of the most important economic pests. To date, the classification of Chinese Thripidae is chaotic and urgently needs more intensive research. In this study, the phylogeny of 59 known genera of Chinese Thripidae was investigated based on the specimens deposited in Northwest A & F University (NWAFU), Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Science (IZCAS), and South China Agricultural University (SCAU), by using the principle and methods of cladistics, and the phylogenetic relationships within the family were also discussed. The results showed that Thripidae was a monophyly, but except the Thripinae; Dendrothripinae and Panchaetothripinae, as sister group to each other, had close relationship; the classification status of Sericothripinae should be dropped as Sericothripini or Sericothrips genus-group; the classification of Panchaetothripini needed further research.
