Taxonomic Revision and Geographical Distribution of Odorrana tianmuii in Four Provinces of Eastern China

Abstract:The taxonomy and geographical distribution of Odorrana schmackeri in 4 provinces of eastern China remain unclear. In this study, the taxonomy and geographical distribution of O. schmackeri were compared with O. huanggangensis, O. tianmuii and O. schmackeri from the type locality Yichang (Hubei province) based on the analysis of morphology and mitochondrial 12S sequence. The results showed that the populations of O. schmackeri from Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Jiangxi (Sanqing Mountain) had similar morphological characters with O. tianmuii, and the average genetic distances between the populations of O. schmackeri from the above 4 provinces and that from Yichang, Hubei were 0.067-0.069, and that of O. huanggangensis were 0.027-0.029, whereas the genetic distances between them and O. tianmuii were0-0.001. This study suggested the populations of O. schmackeri distributed in Zhejiang, the south of Anhui, Yixing city of Jiangsu, Sanqing Mountain and Pengze county of Jiangxi, the east of Poyang Lake should be revised as O. tianmuii. O. huanggangensis was distributed in Mt. Wuyi from the south of Xin River in northeastern Jiangxi, whereas O. schmackeri was only distributed in the west of Poyang Lake of western Jiangxi. The taxonomic status of populations of O. schmackeri between the east of Ganjiang River and the west of Fuhe River in Jiangxi as well as the east of Fujian have yet to be determined, and whether the differentiation of O. schmackeri species complex in the eastern China related to the geographical barrier of river system should be further resolved.
