Application of Index of Biological Integrity Based on Fish to Assess the River's Health in the Middle and Lower Reaches of Lijiang River

Abstract:Four quarterly samplings for fish species were carried out during the period from April 2014 to January 2015. By the filtration of 22 primary indices, the evaluation system was established on the basis of index of biological integrity (IBI) with 7 evaluation indices selected, including total number of species, ratio of cyprinid species with total number of species, the number of Gobioninae, the number of Coltrinae, ratio of omnivorous species with total number of species, ratio of sensitive species with total number of species, and ratio of tolerant species with total number of species. The IBI value of each sampling site was then calculated using 1, 3, 5 approximation of value assignment, and the values were classified into 6 levels to assess the biological integrity of fish: extremely good (58~60), good (48~52), normal (40~44), bad (28~34), and extremely bad (12~22), no fish (0). The results showed that, the IBI score of the middle and lower reaches of Lijiang River was over 40, as well as that in each river segment (Guilin segment, Yangshuo segment, and Pingle segment), indicated that an average level and above.
