Intensity of Courtship Behavior in Captive Chinese Monals: Effect of Weather Conditions

Abstract:Courtship display is essential for establishment of a relationship and mating success in birds. Low egg fertility of the captive Chinese monal (Lophophorus lhuysii) is one of the main reasons for the failure of the breeding. Using the scan sampling method, the intensity of courtship behaviors as well as the effects of weather conditions were investigated in captive L. lhuysii in Fengtongzhai National Nature Reserve. We observed four males and five females and found that the males usually performed the courtship. Courtship occurred from late March to the end of May, with peak time in April. Daily peak time was from 07:00 to 09:00 in the morning. The generalized linear mix model revealed that weather conditions would affect the courtship. In cloudy and rainy day, courtship occurred more frequently than in sunny day. Therefore, human disturbance should be reduced during the periods of courtship. Meanwhile, to improve the chances of copulation and successful fertilization, suitable conditions such as moderate temperature and humidity should be manufactured.
