Preliminary Survey on Bat Diversity along Xiaoshui River Coast in Lingling Section of Yongzhou, Hunan Province

Abstract:A preliminary investigation on bat diversity along Xiaoshui River coast in Lingling section of Yongzhou was conducted from May 2011 to August 2013. A total of 8 species of bat which belonged to 3 families and 5 genera were recorded, and the distribution pattern of Oriental accounted for the majority (62.5%). Pipistrellus abramus and Hipposideros armiger were the dominated population while Scotomanes ornatus was very rare. Bats preferred bamboo clump, tree canopy, cliff, cave, vernacular dwelling and ancient architecture. Although the bat species between the upstream and downstream were different, the "activity centers" of the bat from both areas would be formed nearby the water and vegetation. The vegetation and cave hibernating bats showed a shorter activity period than those of house hibernating ones annually. These results increased our understanding of current survival status of bats and provide reference for long-term and effective protection for bat along Xiaoshui River coast.
