Skeletal Morphogenesis of the Vertebrae of Feirana quadranus Larva

Abstract:Vertebrae remodeling of anuran tadpole from aquatic habitat to land habitat occurs in order to adapt the land habitat. The vertebrae of Feirana quadranus larva at different Gosner stages were double stained using alcian blue and alizarin red, and the morphological structure of the vertebrae were described in this study. The results showed that the central and neural arch of presacrals Ⅰ-Ⅷ of the tadpoles started to ossify at Gosner stage 26, and this might indicate that the longer duration time of tadpole development, the earlier ossification of the vertebrae. In addition, at Gosner stage 42, the prezygapophysis and prozygapophysis appeared. The urostyle formed by the fusion of the postsacral veterbrae and hypochord at Gosner stage 46.Our result also showed that the developmental stages of formation of the zygapophysis and urostyle in F. quadranus tadpoles were similar to those of most anurans. We hypothesized that the formation of prezygapophysis and prozygapophysis was beneficial to the movement of forelimbs and hind limbs, and the presence of urostyle was related to the power transfer of hind limbs.
