Abstract:
In the present paper, a new species of the genus Metaphire is described.
Metaphire coacervata sp. nov. (Figs. 1-5)
Length 75-76 mm, diameter 2.5-3.0 mm, segments 91-103. Prostomium 2/3 epilobous. First dorsal pore in 11/12. Clitellum in ⅩⅣ-ⅩⅥ, without setae on it.
Setae all fine, their numbers: 27-28/, 31-33/, 40-46/, 44-45/ⅩⅩ, 47-49/ⅩⅩⅤ; 24-25() between spermathecal pores; 9-11(ⅩⅧ) between male pores.
Male pores situated in small and shallow copulatory chambers that are on the ventro-lateral sides of ⅩⅧ. About 1/3 of circumference ventrally apart. The copulatory chambers aperture appear as a vertical slit with a large wrinkle of skin on the lateral side of the chambers, which cover the apertures. Widee gland area around the copulatory chamber extends anteriorly to 1/2ⅩⅦ and posteriorly to 1/2ⅩⅨ. There is no genital papilla in or out of the chambers.
Female pore single, on usual position.
Spermathecal pores one pair, in 7/8, about 5/9 of circumference ventrally apart. There are two large gland areas on the ventral sides of and .
Septa 8/9 and 9/10 present, very thin. Caeca simple. Testis sacs small, 1 st pair united in “Ⅴ” shape, those in ⅩⅡ united broadly. Seminal vesicles in ⅩⅠ and ⅩⅡ, developed, their dorsal lobes conspicuous. Prostate glands well developed, in ⅩⅥ-ⅩⅪ. Accessory glands well developed, in the ventral side to the prostate glands. Spermathecal ampulla oblate or heart shaped, about 2.5 mm long and 2.0 mm wide, its wall thin. The ampulla duct thick and long and there is no membrance around it. Diverticulum is shorter than main punch and twisted in zigzag fashion or wave shaped. Seminal chamber long round, rather small. Accessory glands in ventral sides of and , well developed.
Holotype: GZ-Z00016B1, 75 mm long, 3.0 mm wide, 103 segments. Setae numbers: 28/, 32/, 40/, 44/ⅩⅩ, 49/ⅩⅩⅤ; 24 () between spermathecal pores and 11 (ⅩⅧ) between male pores. Paratype: GZ-Z00016B2-3, GZ-Z00017B (1), GZ-Z00027A (4), seven specimens. Both holotype and paratype were collected from Mt. Taiyang (28º14´N, 107º09´E, Alt. 1650 m), Kuankuoshui Forest Region, Suiyang County, Guizhou Province, China on August 17, 1984. All the type specimens are deposited in Institute of Biology, Guizhou Academy of Sciences, Guiyang.
The present new species is similar to Pheretima tecta Chen 1946 in one pair of spermathecal pores in 7/8; the short and twisted diverticulum; well developed accessory glands, prostate glands and seminal vesicles and in having copulatory chamber, but differs from the latter by the small and shallow copulatory chamber; the simple caeca; the present of septa 8/9 and 9/10. Both ampullar and diverticular ducts are not invested thickly with muscles growing with the peritoneum.
