The Karyotypic Differentiation of Polypedates dugritei with Description of a Superspecies (Rhacophoridae, Anura)

The karyotypes, C-bands and NORs of 4 populations (Mt. Emei, Mt. Washan and Zhaojue of Sichuan Province and Lichuan of Hubei Province) of Polypedates dugritei, were observed and compared. The result revealed there were two distinct karyotypes in 4 population of same species. The karyotypes of population from Lichuan and Zhaojue were the same. It not only differs from P. dugritei from Mt. Emei but also any other species in the genus.
The authors suggested it be a new species in view of its distinct karyotypic characteristics and named it as Polypedates zhaojuensis. The adult male No. 6883 collected at Zhaojue of Sichuan in July 2, 1993 is assigned as the type specimen.
This paper reports a new superspecies of Anura found in China for the first time.
Both karyotypes of P. zhaojuensis sp. nov. and P. dugritei have the same diploid number, 26 with 5 large and 8 small pairs of chromosome. The zhaojuensis has a conspicuous secondary constriction on the middle at long arm of No. 10 chromosome associated just with the C-banding and NORs. But the P. dugrilei has a satellite on the terminal of long arm of No. 10 chromosome associate just with the C-banding and NORs.
