Observation of the Antenna Sensilla of Rodolia limbata Motschulsky under Scanning Electron Microscope

Abstract:The antenna morphology and sensilla of larva and adult of Rodolia limbata Motschulsky were studied using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results showed that adult clavate antenna consisted of scape, pedicel and 6 subsegments of flagellum. Both female and male antenna of the species had the same 3 types of sensilla, including sensilla trichoid, sensilla chaetica, and sensilla basiconica, and the length and distribution of which were significantly different. Sensilla basiconica were clustered on the 4th to 6th subsegment of flagellum with high density  on the end of the 6th subsegment. The larva coniform antenna were shorter and consisted of three segments, and on which only a few sensilla tricoid and sensilla basiconica could be observed. No difference was found in the morphological characters of antennae and the type and distribution of the sensilla between the male and female larva and adult.
