The Research Progress of Deer Pelage Morphology

Deer is one of the two biggest predominant terricolous ruminants living in the world. There are many species of deer and widely distribute in various habitats including forests, shrubs, marshes and even in the arctic tundras. The special pelage morphology of deer plays an important role during the long-term adaptibility to environmental changes. This review summarizes the research status of deer pelage morphology in mammal taxonomy, species identification and functional morphology. And these are further analyzed by microscopic observation of the winter hair of Pere David's deer Elaphurus davidianus in Beijing Milu Park. The paper also discusses the research trend of deer pelage morphology in system evolution and taxonomy, convergent evolution, the heat transfer performance of pelage and bionics.
