Bird Diversity and Bird Strike Risk at Hefei Xinqiao International Airport

Abstract: 

It is necessary to study bird diversity of a new building airport to alleviate bird strike risk. Birds of the newly built Hefei Xinqiao International Airport and surrounding areas were surveyed by line transect method from January 2012 to February 2013. Bird strike risk was assessed based on relative amount, occurrence rate, occurrence habitats and flight height of the birds in the airport. A total of 79 species including 34 residents, 21 summer migrants, 12 winter migrants and 11 passing migrants species were recorded. There were 35 insectivore, 8 granivore, 15 omnivore and 21 carnivore species. In all types of habitats, woodland showed the highest bird density and Shannon-Wiener index (D=10.25 ind·hm-2, H′=2.12). Bird density and Shannon-Wiener index were the highest in the autumn (D=9.23 ind·hm-2, H′= 2.13). A total of 23 bird species were distinguished as high strike risk birds including 60% of residents and 52% of insectivore birds, 12 species (R≥40) were inside the airport and 21 species (R≥40) outside. It was important to take effective measures such as enhance the management of resident birds and insectivore birds, ecological control and integrated protection to reduce the risk of bird strikes.
