Reproductive Character Displacement in the Call of Chiromantis doriae

Abstract: Reproductive character displacement is the process by which traits evolve in response to selection to lessen reproductive interactions between species. It is one of the strategies for sympatric species to deal with interspecies reproductive interference by diverse reproductive traits and maintaining the species boundary. Anuran mainly relies on sound communication for breeding. In this research, we studied reproductive character displacement of the call of Chiromantis doriae. C. doriae and Feihyla vittata belong to different genus in Rhacophoridae, respectively. But they are similar in morphology, male call spectral characteristics, breeding seasons and breeding micro-environments morphological characteristics which indicate reproductive interference to some extent. We chose C. doriae as the research object, compared the call parameters of sympatric and allopatric C. doriae. Courtship call of C. doriae contains 4 to 8 notes generally. We obtained three principal components from principal component analysis of eight call parameters. Mixed linear model analyses show that the RC3 which related to temporal cues and frequency modulation is significantly different between sympatric and allopatric population, the other two principal components show nonsignificant. In note parameters, mixed linear model analyses of sympatric and allopatric population show that note main frequency and note duration are significantly different and there is no significant difference in note interval. In general, sympatric population has lower domain frequency, longer duration and more obvious frequency modulation than allopatric population. It will help sympatric C. doriae to enlarge the discrepancy between conspecific signal and monosyllabic call of F. vittata with high dominant frequency, short duration. Our results demonstrate reproductive character displacement exist in the sound communication of C. doriae, which means we expand the range of reproductive character displacement by prove species which not close related can also rise to the process.
