Research on the characteristics and the surrounding environment of Grey Heron’s (Ardea cinerea) nests in Xinxiang Yellow River Wetland

Abstract:Xinxiang Yellow River Wetland Bird National Nature Reserve is a place on the middle migration route, which the migratory birds in China must be passed through, and there are many kinds of birds in the wetland. Now, in this wetland, the interference/disturbing of human being is becoming more and more serious. The habitat and reproduction of the birds have been affected. Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) is the crucial representative wader in Xinxiang Yellow River Wetland, its breeding activity is closely related to the surrounding environment of its habitat. During May to August in 2017, to get the main factors that interfere with the breeding of birds, effectively manage the nature reserve and maintain the diversity of birds, with GPS positioning and quadrat survey, it was investigated that the nest characteristics, the ecological factors of nest site area and the control area of Grey Heron breeding of Chenqiao East Lake in Xinxiang Yellow River Wetland. The results showed: Grey Heron especially like to nest nests in the association of Phragmites australias. The nest type is ground-nest. The main material for nesting is reed. The nest is shallow dish-shaped and face upward. The outer diameter, inner diameter, height, and depth were (39.00±3.28) cm, (79.10±15.39) cm, (31.00±19.80) cm, (5.00±1.43) cm. Comparison of ecological factors between the herons nest site area and control area, It was found that the density, coverage, height of the vegetation in the nest site area were significantly lower than the control area (P<0.05), water depth, the distance from human infrequent and frequent activity were significantly higher than those in control (P<0.05). The factors limiting the nest-site selection of Grey Heron were investigated using binomial logistic regression that based on the Akaike’s Information Criterion. The results showed that Vegetative state and interference factor were the key factors restricting the heron nest-site selection. It was concluded that improving the Grey Heron habitat, protecting the bird diversity was hardly unnecessary with expanding the area of aquatic vegetation and water, blocking the roads through the wetland, injecting water regularly, deal with well the relationship between wetland protection and tourism development, etc.
