Population Density Estimation and Habitat Suitability Assessment of Chinese Monal During Breeding Season in Xiaozhaizigou National Nature Reserve

Abstract:From June to August in 2015 and from March to August in 2016, using population census method, the density of Chinese Monal Lophophorus lhuysii was investigated at Xiaozhaizigou National Nature Reserve and its surrounding region during breeding season. And the habitat quality of Chinese Monal was assessed based on Maxent modeling. The results showed that: during the breeding season, Chinese Monal occurred in the meadow and shrub habitat at altitude between 3500 m ~ 4100 m, with sunny slope. Throughout the entire study area, the suitable habitat covered an area of 120.05 km2 and the sub-suitable habitat covered an area of 141.67 km2. The suitable and sub-suitable habitat area was 49.17 km2 and 48.27 km2 in the Xiaozhaizigou Nature Reserve, respectively. The population density of Chinese Monal was estimated as 4.99 adults/km2, and the population size within the Xiaozhaizigou Nature Reserve was evaluated to be 245 adults. Grazing and herb collection are likely the main local disturbance threating Chinese Monal population. Therefore, it is necessary to control grazing activities and other human disturbance in the nature reserve to protect the biodiversity of alpine regions.
