Effects of inbreeding avoidance on male mate choice in Dendroctonus valens

Abstract:Objective We investigated the effects of inbreeding avoidance behavior on male mate choice in Dendroctonus valens, and wanted to know whether mate choice is based on chemical cues. Methods Respectively, three experiments were carried out to verify male mate choice on sib and non-sib females by chemical cues, male’s mating motivation when presence of sib or non-sib females, the mechanism of kin recognition based on chemical cues and its effect on male’s mating. Results Male preferred non-sib females, and more likely to mate with non-sib females when faced with two different genetic relationship of females. Male significantly reduced the mating success rate in the presence of sib female frass. Conclusion The research showed that male of D. valens had significantly different mating expectations to different genetic relationship of females. Males had significant inbreeding avoidance behavior for females from the same family. The research also showed that the mechanism of kin recognition in male D. valens was based on the chemical cues of female individuals.
