Nest Site Selection of Tachybaptus ruficollis in Caohai National Nature Reserve, Guizhou, China

Abstract:In order to explore the impact factors to nest site selection of Tachybaptus ruficollis in alpine wetland ecosystem,surveys were carried out on nest sites of Tachybaptus ruficollis and diet in Caohai Nature Reserve from April 29th to May 6th of 2013 and 2015. Taking nest as center,the environmental factors of nest sample(1m×1m)and reference were recorded and compared,the result shows that the height of the tallest ruderal and distance to the bank are significant higher in nest sample than those in reference. Principal component analysis on fourteen habitat factors from samples and patches that samples located in shows that Tachybaptus ruficollis prefers to nest in small patches with high,sparse density and few low stem plants. More nests presented in area with abundant diet. This study has practical worth for protecting Tachybaptus ruficollis,and has theoretical worth for the study of avian nest site selection in alpine wetland ecosystem.
