Improved Experimental Techniques of Blood Collection from the Submandibular Vein Plexus in Mice

Abstract:Abstract: Objective To introduce a method of mouse submaxillary blood collection, which is a simple and repeatable blood collection methods in mice. The operators can collect a large amount of blood by using this method. Methods We first choose the best point of blood collection by Anatomical observation of facial blood vessels in mice; then we use micro capillary to collect blood quickly and efficiently. About 20 SPF ICR male mice with a weight range of 18~22 gram were selected, and the blood was collected from the submandibular point use the micro capillary. Results Appropriately, a volume of 0.5~0.7 ml blood could be collected from each mouse within 40~60 seconds by one operator. None of the mice were found dead after the blood collection and also no one was found dead after 10 days of observation and feeding. Conclusions The improved blood collection method has the advantages of smaller traumatic to the experimental mice and can collect more blood. In addition, the operation process can be easily repeated. This method is particularly suitable for beginners or people who need large amounts of blood from mice. This improved blood collect method is an easy, safe, fast and efficient method to get more blood form mice, which should become an extensively used method.
